The History of Shopping in Eltham
The origins of Eltham can be traced back to 1848 when space for a village was reserved at the junction of the Diamond Creek and Yarra River. By 1851, the first Crown allotments were being subdivided and sold, along with a private subdivision developed by J.M. Holloway, known as Little Eltham. At this time, the townβs centre was located around the intersection of Pitt Street and Main Road.
There are records of numerous early settlers and original ships, including Henry Dendy, who operated a flour mill in the area. The Eltham Post Office was opened on the 1st of February in 1854, while the Eltham Hotel has been operating since 1867. The railway line arrived in 1902, which drew businesses further north along Main Road, expanding the shopping precinct to the current town centre.
The original Eltham War Memorial, an obelisk of granite, was unveiled on the 3rd of August in 1919, located in what was the centre of the township. In the 1960s, the memorial was relocated to the front of the Eltham RSL. Again in 20210, it was moved in front of the Eltham War Memorial Building Complex, where it stands now. This central and significant memorial recognises those who served and died in World War 2 and is the centrepiece for modern memorial services, most notably, the annual Eltham ANZAC Day service.
